Below is a list of the types of repairs we carry out for our clients.

Servicing

Servicing is by far the most common type of repair we carry out here. This is because the bulk of issues a carriage clock is going to face are caused by issues that can only be fixed by disassembling the clock, and are caused by wear and tear to the moving parts.

1. We start with a pre-disassembly inspection, noting areas of concern. Then the clock is disassembled and cleaned.

2. Now clean, we can inspect the clock again without dried up oil and grime preventing us from seeing the delicate components. Its now that we polish the pivots of the wheels to remove any wear. The clock is reassembled to check how the pivots fit at the pivot holes.

3. Once this clean inspection has taken place we can begin the bulk of the repair work.

4. The plates of the movement are bushed to take up any wear to the pivot holes. This involves widening the diameter of any worn pivot holes and fitting small brass cylinders which have an internal diameter that matches the pivot.

5. Any surface rust is removed from the steel components.

6. New mainsprings if required are sourced.

7. The platform is disassembled, cleaned and overhauled.

8. The geometry of the strike work is checked to ensure correct operation.

9. Once the repair work is done that clock is polished and then cleaned for a final time.

10. The carriage clock is now ready for reassembly.

11. During reassembly new lubrication is applied. In total four different oils and up to two greases are used throughout the clock to offer the best protection to the clock as it runs in the future.

Restoration

Restoration is a different grade of repair work we do here. It includes everything in a service but we perform cosmetic repairs too. This is often the refinishing of screws, and the tidying up of previous repairs, which while functional have not been finished to a high standard.

We offer this as a separate level to servicing as not every clock will require restoration, and not every client sees the benefit.

Repairs

While repairs are carried out during a service, not every type of repair is included in this. We treat servicing as routine maintenance, much like you would get a car serviced periodically. Repairs can mean any repair not associated with wear and tear. This can be caused by accidents or breakages.

For example new wheels and pinions. These are rarely needed in a carriage clock so we don’t include them in the price to service a carriage clock but are repairs we can undertake here should you need them.

The most common repairs we do that aren’t included in a service are:

• Cutting new wheels and pinions

• Platform repairs

• Making new strike work components

The list of repairs we can undertake here is extensive and its not worth trying to list all of them, but if you have a clock that has been serviced recently, or has been subjected to drop or similar accident, get in touch and we will advise you on the best course of action.

Case Restoration

We can also deal with cosmetic and structural repairs to the cases of the carriage clock we repair.

We are able to replace missing or broken glass panels, repair damaged porcelain panels, and replace missing case components like handles.

We can also refinish the case, whether it be polished brass, silver plated, or gilded.

Dial Restoration

We are able to offer a complete dial restoration service, starting with the repair to chipped enamel dials, replacing retailers marks, and re-fixing dial feet. We can remake missing sections of dial masks and resilver brass dials.
